FLV Player: success!
Today we've built the prototype of the FLV Player. The planning worked and we now have a flexible FLV Player that can play an URL that is passed via the page the player is on. ASP can be used to paste any URL from a database.
It doesn't look like much yet but we are pretty happy it worked and we now only need to design a GNG skin for the player instead of the standard blue one we are using for testing. The prototype we have now is actually capable of playing a FLV video from another server so it would also be possible to stream all the videos from the playstream.com server the GNG already has. Wether the webserver or the streaming server will be used will be decided later.
Of course this was only the video player module of the media library we are building and there are still a lot of work to be done.

I worked quite a bit with the earlier version of Flash with Flemming Lyngse with great success - especially the load-times are great - we had 9 streams running at any one time allowing instant editing and "zapping" btw. streams - something that may be relevant to you as well.
It sounds like great work you are doing. Looking forward to see your first skin. Remember: Allways at least 3 prototypes!!!
One concern: What is your analysis and research so far on what may be the the main issue in the project: The backend: How to upload and add metatags fluently - and go from there to the user interface of the player??

The discussion about using streaming or progressive download is still going on. Streaming might save some bandwidth but doesn't allow people to download the movies. Progressive download doesn't allow people to "zap" around in the movies right away though. Progressive download is much like streaming otherwise and allows instant playback.
The FLV Player was primarily a project to find out if we were able to actually use Flash as a new player platform for the website and it seems to work very well.
We are also still discussing the backend and I think we already have a lot of great ideas to be posted on the blog soon.
